5 Underrated Boxing Quotes to get you Thinking

There is a reason boxing quotes resonate with the human soul and motivate us to push through. It is a sport where an individual not only faces an opponent but faces themselves in the confines of rope and outstretched canvas. All fighters face an internal struggle, forcing them to look deep inside themselves and realise who they are when situations are dire.

Here are some underrated boxing quotes to get you thinking.

“The hero and the coward both feel the same thing. But the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It’s the same thing, fear, but it’s what you do with it that matters.” - Cus D’amato

One thing to remember is that we all feel fear. We encounter challenges regularly in day to day life, but we also have choices. The choice to shy away or choose to face the obstacle head-on. It may not be as dramatic as it would be in the boxing ring, but there are times you will have to decide to grit your teeth and go for it!

In order to be at the top and maintain your focus you have to have something that motivates you. For me, it was what I perceived as a lack of respect from the boxing world as well as the media, which made me want to work so hard and be great.” – “Marvellous” Marvin Hagler

Everybody has a particular fuel that drives them and continues propelling them forward. You might have a goal to reach a benchmark or a desire to prove someone wrong. Find your why, and the game changes.

That’s the most beautiful thing that I like about boxing: you can take a punch. The biggest thing about taking a punch is your ego reacts and there’s no better spiritual lesson than trying to not pay attention to your ego’s reaction.”David O Russell

We are wired to respond rapidly to a perceived or actual threat. It takes discipline to exercise self-control, especially from an ego-based response. In combat sports, there is the tendency for individuals to have to "win" or dominate their training partners when the goal is to learn. Those who let their egos get the better of them, usually don't last. Most boxing gyms will tell you to "leave your ego at the door" and rightly so. Remember, there is always someone better than you so allow yourself to make mistakes, learn from them and be in control of what comes next.

When I was a young fellow I was knocked down plenty. I wanted to stay down, but I couldn’t. I had to collect the two dollars for winning or go hungry. I had to get up. I was one of those hungry fighters. You could have hit me on the chin with a sledgehammer for five dollars. When you haven’t eaten for two days you’ll understand.” – J.Dempsey

Hunger is frequently talked about in boxing and combat sports. Many great boxers have emerged from destitute circumstances and had to fight their way to a better life. Not everyone has been hungry in the literal sense but when your urge to succeed supersedes in the face of any obstacle and you're willing to go the extra mile and do the things no one else wants to do, one can be described as hungry.

Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the fewer people appreciate it. -George Foreman

The entertainment factor of boxing is undeniable. The more messy, bloody and unpredictable the fight is, the more the crowd erupts. People forget that boxing is also a science and an art. Some "boring" fights are some of the most technical, high-pressure chess games of strategy. Not everyone understands the techniques at play but to understand them is to appreciate them.
